New Edition’s Michael Bivins Finally Receives High School Diploma at Age 49

New Edition‘s Michael Bivins have accomplish so many things during his 30-year career, but last week he achieved something truly special to him. The R&B veteran received an honorary high school degree from his alma mater on Thursday (June 7).

According to WHDH-TV (News 7 Boston), the N.E. singer returned to Belmont High School in Belmont, Mass., to get his diploma. In 1985, a then 15-year-old Bivens had to leave high school during his sophomore year to tour with New Edition after they released their second self-titled album. 34 years later, Bivins came back to his school to finish what he started.

On his Instagram page, the 49-year-old music mogul posted a photo of himself wearing a maroon cap and gown, holding a basketball and his diploma from Belmont High School.
Bivins was a star player on the school’s basketball team as well.

At the ceremony, Bivins became teary-eyed after being presented with his honorary diploma from the class of 1986.

“It’s never too late, don’t ever feel like you can’t go back fix something and do something again,” he told WHDH-TV. “As long as you have breathe, you can go back and do the same thing and maybe it’ll have a different outcome.”

In attendance was his mother, wife, his four kids and fellow high school basketball teammates. Thelma Burns, a former coordinator at the school told WHDH-TV that Bivins never lost sight of the importance of education, even after leaving high school.

“You know, he had to leave school to do this musical thing but he always had education in the back of his mind,” she said.
